Yorkshire League New Season

The Yorkshire League (teams of eight) fixtures for the upcoming 2022-23 season have now been published.
With 49 teams entered, there will be a Division 6 again this season.

The first match day is Sunday 25th September, and the full fixture list is available via the League Season page or here.

We welcome back extra teams from several clubs, in particular three teams from Doncaster who did not enter the League in 2021-22.

Sheffield A, winners of Division 1 last season, begin with an away match against Harrogate A.
The longest journey any team will have to make? – maybe Ripon B’s visit to Hull for Match 2.

Waddington Shield and Yorkshire Trophy

It’s time to get your entries in for these knockout competitions.

The Waddington Shield is the county teams of 4 qualifier for the Pachabo.

The default for this competition is face-to-face play unless agreed by both captains to play on-line.

The Yorkshire Trophy is available to all first round losers of the Waddington Shield (free) and can also be entered directly by teams with players ranking National Master and below.

More details are available in the event calendar, and the closing dates for entries are 4th October 2022 (Waddington Shield) and January 31st 2023 for the Yorkshire Trophy.

YCBA Disciplinary Ruling

Following a complaint concerning the conduct of YCBA member Mr David Beck, a recent hearing of the Disciplinary Committee ruled that an offence under the YCBA Constitution had been committed.

A penalty of suspension from all competitions sponsored or licensed by the YCBA was imposed on Mr Beck. This will run for a period of two years and three months commencing from the date of the hearing, 9 May 2022.

All affiliated clubs in Yorkshire will be advised of this penalty.

The decision was upheld on a reference to the EBU Laws & Ethics Committee.

NBL first round success

Yorkshire had a great start to the first weekend of the NBL (Northern bridge league). The A team is currently second to Manchester whilst the B and C teams head their respective groups by large margins. Congratulations to all involved and good luck for the next round (20th August).

The current league positions can be found here.

Brian Davison (1948-2022)

It is with great sadness that we have to announce the passing of Brian Davison last Friday (1st July).

His forte, without doubt, was his teaching skills. There will be numerous students who will have passed through Brian’s ‘hands’, whose abilities will have been improved with the knowledge that he imparted to them. At his home club of Olicana (Ilkley), he was responsible for running, setting up, scoring and teaching in many sessions over the past 10 years but not only this he also found time to do teaching at Leeds bridge club. He also played regularly for the Ilkley teams in the Yorkshire League.

As if this was not enough, he was an active member of the YCBA bridge development committee. Out of this came the YCBA on-line beginner’s course, for which, Brian was one of the main presenters. He also, with Jim Edwards, helped develop bridgeplay.uk, which is now being used by clubs across the county for teaching purposes.

Together with Jim and Gill Copeland he was also responsible for setting up and running the improvers’ pairs at Leeds, which was so successful, players had to be turned away some years! His contribution not only helped adults get into the game but he also ran sessions at schools in Leeds and Harrogate.

At county level he was a selector for the Northern Bridge League B and C divisions and represented Yorkshire at this event in the B team.

Brian was very generous with his time, never wanted thanks and was extremely popular with all his students and members at both Ilkley and Leeds, he will be sorely missed.

His funeral will be at Lawnswood crematorium on 20th July at 10 a.m. and all are welcome.

No flowers please and all donations to the Wheatfields hospice.

Online Yorkshire League Spring 2022

The Spring 2022 season of the Online Yorkshire League was completed on Sunday 24th April. Congratulations to the divisional winners Sheffield Buzz, Thirsk A, Halifax A and Leeds F. Full results are available here

43 teams from 15 clubs took part, playing 9 matches of 8 boards each over three match days. An innovation this season was giving teams the option of playing their home matches on RealBridge as an alternative to Bridge Base Online. This was generally well received despite some players being initially apprehensive about a new playing environment for the online game.

Thanks to all players. The next season will be in January and February of 2023.
